Ulan-Ude is the rare Siberian city with a distinct cultural identity — Russian on the surface, Buryat and Buddhist underneath. The unmissables are the surreal Lenin head, the Ivolginsky Datsan and Rinpoche Bagsha monastery, the open-air ethnographic museum, and the old merchant quarter around the central square. A day is enough for the city itself; allow another for the datsan.
