Borgo Maggiore

San Marino municipality below Monte Titano, linking the market square to the old city by cable car.

Borgo Maggiore sits at the foot of Monte Titano, directly below the historic city of San Marino. It is one of the nine municipalities of the republic, and the practical entry point for most visitors arriving by road. The weekly market held here is the largest in the country.

The main reason to stop in Borgo Maggiore rather than drive straight up to the old town is the cable car. It runs from the market square up to the city center in about three minutes, saving you a winding road climb and depositing you just inside the old walls. Riding it is a pleasure in its own right: the car swings out over the hillside with a wide view across the Emilia-Romagna plain toward Rimini and the Adriatic.

The town itself is unpretentious. There are a handful of cafes and restaurants catering more to locals than tourists, which makes it a pleasant contrast to the souvenir-heavy streets above. If you want to eat a proper meal without paying old-town prices, this is the place to do it.

Eating Out

Borgo Maggiore has a handful of cafes and trattorias catering to local workers and residents rather than tourists. Prices are noticeably lower than in the old city above. The local staples are piadina (flatbread filled with cured meats, squacquerone cheese, or roasted vegetables) and pasta with Sangiovese-based meat sauces. Several bars along the main street serve good espresso and light lunches. If you want to eat a proper sit-down meal without paying tourist-centre prices, eating in Borgo Maggiore before or after taking the cable car is the sensible approach.

Things to Do

Borgo Maggiore is primarily a transit point for the old city above, but it repays a short stop. The cable car up to the historic capital is a pleasure in itself. The weekly market — Thursday mornings — is the largest in the republic and worth timing your visit around. The church of the Santuario della Beata Vergine della Consolazione is the main religious monument in the town itself.
