San Marino Cable Car (Funivia)

Three-minute cable car ride from the market square up to the old city

The cable car connecting Borgo Maggiore's central piazza to the historic city of San Marino above. The three-minute ride swings out over the hillside with a clear view across the Emilia-Romagna plain toward Rimini and the Adriatic coast on clear days. The station in Borgo Maggiore is in the main market square, making it easy to combine with the Thursday market. The upper station is a short walk from the main historic centre. Return tickets are cheaper than two singles. Runs continuously through the day; no need to book.

A story
The San Marino cable car, known as the Funivia di San Marino, was opened in 1959 and runs on a continuous loop between Borgo Maggiore and the historic city above. The original wooden cabins were replaced in 2012 with modern glass-sided cars, which dramatically improved the views on the three-minute ascent. At the top, the cable car deposits passengers directly inside the old city walls — a remarkably convenient arrival for what is otherwise a steep uphill walk.
