Borgo Maggiore is primarily a transit point for the old city above, but it repays a short stop. The cable car up to the historic capital is a pleasure in itself. The weekly market — Thursday mornings — is the largest in the republic and worth timing your visit around. The church of the Santuario della Beata Vergine della Consolazione is the main religious monument in the town itself.
