The countryside around Novi Sad rewards a day or two. Fruška Gora, the long forested ridge south of the city, is dotted with sixteen medieval Serbian Orthodox monasteries — some still active, some ruined, all surrounded by vineyards. The road from Petrovaradin south takes you through the heart of the range.
The town of Sremski Karlovci, twelve kilometres south, was the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Patriarchate for two centuries and has a perfectly preserved Baroque centre. Combine it with a visit to one of the larger wineries — Kovačević and Mačkov Podrum both do tastings.
