Sargan Eight Railway

Heritage narrow-gauge railway looping through mountain forests

The Sargan Eight is a narrow-gauge heritage railway that climbs through the hills above Mokra Gora in a spectacular series of loops and spirals. The journey covers about 15 km of track but gains 300 metres in altitude through engineering that amounts to a tourist attraction in its own right. The steam locomotive hauls open carriages through forests and over viaducts, with views across the valleys towards Bosnia.

Mokra Gora station is the main departure point, about 30 km from Zlatibor. Trains run daily in summer; check the timetable at the station. The ride takes roughly 90 minutes for the full round trip.

A story
The Sargan Eight gets its name from the figure-of-eight shape the track traces up the mountain. It was originally part of a narrow-gauge line connecting Belgrade to the Adriatic coast, but the route was too steep for standard trains and was abandoned in 1974. The restored tourist railway runs the same switchbacks the original engineers devised in the 1920s.
