Zlatibor Green Market

The Green Market in central Zlatibor is the best place to buy the region's famous local products. Kajmak (the rich local cream cheese) is sold from large tubs and is notably better here than anything available in Belgrade. Smoked and dried meats, preserved fruits, rakia (fruit brandy), and honey round out the food stalls.

The knitwear section is the market's most distinctive feature: women from Sirogojno and surrounding villages sell hand-knitted sweaters, socks, hats, and mittens with traditional patterns at prices that are reasonable and honestly negotiated. The quality is real — these garments are worn by local people, not made for tourists.

A story
The Sirogojno knitwear sold at the Zlatibor market became internationally known in the 1970s when a cooperative of village women began exporting hand-knitted sweaters to European shops. The patterns are geometric and traditional, derived from embroidery designs that predate industrialisation by centuries. At the market, you buy directly from the makers.
