Hlavná Ulica

Hlavná ulica is Košice's main street — a long pedestrian promenade running roughly north to south through the old town, about 1.5 kilometres from end to end. It is wide enough to function as a public square rather than simply a street, and lined on both sides with a mixture of Gothic, Baroque, Classicist, and Secessionist architecture that has been carefully restored over the past few decades. The concentration of significant buildings along a single street is remarkable.

The centrepiece is St. Elisabeth Cathedral at the southern end of the most active section, flanked by the St. Michael Chapel and, across the street, the State Theatre. Further north, the street is lined with palaces, churches, and cultural institutions, all now occupied by cafés, restaurants, and shops at ground level. The plague column and several fountains provide visual anchors. Hlavná ulica is where you will spend most of your time in Košice — it is the kind of street that makes a city a pleasure to walk through, and it gives a misleadingly good impression of Slovak urban heritage.
