St. Urban Tower

The St. Urban Tower is a free-standing Gothic bell tower on Hlavná ulica, immediately adjacent to St. Elisabeth Cathedral. It was built in the 14th and 15th centuries to house the cathedral's largest bells, and its name comes from a legend that the city's bell-makers melted down a statue of St. Urban — the patron saint of wine — to cast the tower's great bell after an unusually bad grape harvest; presumably the saint was judged to have failed in his duties.

The tower is currently used as an exhibition space and can be entered during opening hours. The view from the upper gallery looks directly onto the decorated exterior of the cathedral, providing a perspective on the sculptural detail that is not easily seen from street level. The combination of the tower, the chapel, and the cathedral on this section of Hlavná ulica represents the finest Gothic ensemble in Slovakia.
