Andrej Bagar Theatre

The Andrej Bagar Theatre is Nitra's main stage, named after the Slovak actor who was born in the city in 1900 and became one of the most celebrated figures in Slovak theatre. The current building dates from the 1980s and sits in the lower part of the Old Town near the pedestrian zone, though the theatre company itself has roots going back much further.

Performances are in Slovak, which limits their accessibility to most foreign visitors, but the building is worth a look from outside and occasionally hosts concerts or dance performances that transcend the language barrier. Check the programme if you're in town for a few days — Nitra has a lively theatrical tradition and the Bagar Theatre is its centrepiece.
