Kanin Ski Resort

The Kanin ski resort rises directly above Bovec, with the cable car station just outside town. It is the highest ski area in Slovenia, reaching 2,300 metres, and the terrain suits intermediate and advanced skiers best — the upper bowls are wide and the off-piste options considerable. A cross-border agreement with the Italian resort of Sella Nevea means the two areas are linked, giving access to a sizeable combined domain.

The season typically runs from December to April. The gondola ride up from Bovec takes about 20 minutes and is worth doing even without skis — the views of the Soča valley below and the Julian Alps in all directions are extraordinary. In summer, the upper station is the starting point for serious mountain walks, including routes toward Triglav via the southern approach.

A story
Kanin is the highest ski resort in Slovenia, with lifts rising to 2,300 metres above sea level. It straddles the Italian border — the top lifts connect to the Sella Nevea resort in Friuli — and on clear days the views take in the entire northern Adriatic coast. Because it sits so high, snow conditions are reliable even in years when lower Slovenian resorts struggle.
