Regional Museum Celje

The Regional Museum of Celje occupies the reconstructed Counts' Palace in the old town — a handsome 16th-century building that was built on the foundations of an earlier Roman and medieval structure. The museum covers the full sweep of the region's history, from prehistoric finds through the Roman city of Celeia, the medieval period of the Counts of Celje, and the more recent industrial and social history of Styria.

The Roman collection is the highlight. The city of Celeia was one of the most important Roman settlements in what is now Slovenia, and the finds here — including funerary monuments, mosaics, everyday objects, and the famous Celje Ceiling — give a vivid picture of life in the province. The medieval section covers the Counts of Celje with original objects and documents. There is also a strong collection of 19th and early 20th-century material culture from the Slovenian Styria region.

The palace building itself is worth a look: the renovated courtyard arcade and the rooms that retain their original ceiling beams and painted decoration give a sense of what the residence looked like in its prime. Labels are in Slovenian and German, with some English.

A story
The museum's most prized exhibit is the Celje Ceiling — a set of painted plaster panels from the 1st or 2nd century AD, discovered during building renovations in the 1920s. The panels depict scenes from Roman daily life and mythology in remarkably vivid colour, and are considered among the finest examples of Roman decorative painting north of the Alps.
