Šempeter Roman Necropolis

The Šempeter Roman Necropolis, about 11 km west of Celje on the road toward Vransko, is one of the most impressive and least-visited Roman sites in Slovenia. Four monumental tomb monuments from the 1st to 3rd century AD stand in an outdoor setting alongside the Savinja River, reconstructed from fragments discovered during road construction in 1952.

The tombs belong to wealthy Roman families of Celeia — the Spectatii, Vindonii, and others — and are decorated with elaborate carved reliefs depicting mythological scenes, portraits, and daily life. The quality of the carving rivals anything in the Alpine Roman world, and the isolation of the site (a small park in an otherwise agricultural valley) gives it an atmosphere that more crowded Roman sites cannot match. It is signposted from the main road and takes about 45 minutes to visit properly.
