St. Daniel's Cathedral

The Cathedral of St. Daniel is the main Catholic church in Celje and the seat of the Diocese of Celje. The building dates from the 14th century, constructed in Gothic style, though it has been modified and extended several times over the centuries. The interior contains notable Gothic choir stalls and a Baroque altar, with fragments of original medieval decoration surviving in the side chapels.

The cathedral stands in the lower town, a few minutes' walk from the pedestrian zone, and its tower is one of the more prominent landmarks in the city skyline. The Counts of Celje used the church as their burial place during the 15th century; some of the funerary monuments have survived, though many were removed or lost over the centuries.
