Kamnik is an easy trip from Ljubljana by car, bus, or train. Trains run to Kamnik from Ljubljana, with the Kamnik Mesto stop closest to the old centre. Buses are useful for reaching the Kamniška Bistrica valley, though services thin out as you go farther into the mountains.
For Velika Planina, the lower cable-car station is in the Kamniška Bistrica valley, about 10 km north of Kamnik. Having a car makes the mountain side of the trip much easier.
