When to Go

Maribor has a continental climate: hot summers, cold winters, and a fair amount of rain in spring and autumn. The city works in any season. Summer is the most active, with the Lent Festival in late June filling the riverside for about two weeks with music, theatre, and outdoor events — the biggest draw on the calendar. The vineyard harvest in October adds an autumnal appeal.

Winter brings skiing on the Pohorje and the Golden Fox FIS World Cup slalom in January, one of the biggest ski events in Slovenia and consistently well attended. The old town is pleasant in cold weather, when the café culture moves indoors and the pace slows.

Spring is quiet but the landscape is at its best — the vineyards above the city are green and the Pohorje trails open. Avoid the city on weekdays in late August if possible, when the university is back in session and accommodation is tighter.
