Co-Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

Concrete-and-glass modernist cathedral on the main avenue

If the Gothic and Baroque churches of Slovenia have left you a little numb, Nova Gorica's co-cathedral is a refreshing change. Built in 1982 and elevated to co-cathedral status of the Koper diocese in 2004, it is unapologetically modernist — a concrete shell rising in folded planes, with the bell tower attached as a slim free-standing slab. The interior is lit by deep ribbon windows of coloured glass.

Reactions tend to split sharply between people who think it is the best contemporary church in Slovenia and people who don't think it looks like a church at all. Either way, it suits the surrounding planned city better than a steeple ever could.
