Lectar is an old inn and gingerbread workshop on Linhartov trg that has been making decorated honey-bread hearts — lectarji — for generations. The tradition of painting and decorating these gingerbread shapes in bright colours is a distinctly Slovenian folk craft, and the Lectar workshop keeps it alive in a building that has served as an inn since the 18th century.
You can watch the bakers at work, buy decorated hearts as souvenirs, and eat a full meal in the restaurant on the ground floor. The Lectar hearts — typically a red-glazed shape with a small mirror or picture in the centre — have become one of the standard symbols of Slovenian folk culture, displayed at festivals and given as gifts. The workshop also runs occasional hands-on sessions where you can paint your own.
