Radovljica

Slovenian medieval town above the Sava, known for painted facades, beekeeping, and chocolate

Radovljica is a small medieval town perched on a bluff above the Sava river in northwestern Slovenia, about 8 km from Bled. Its main square, Linhartov trg, is one of the best-preserved medieval town centres in the country — a row of Gothic and Renaissance houses with painted facades and wrought-iron details.

The town is known for two things: beekeeping and chocolate. The Beekeeping Museum (Čebelarski muzej) traces the Slovenian tradition of decorative painted beehive panels, and the annual Chocolate Festival in April draws crowds from across the region. Several good restaurants on the main square serve traditional Slovenian cuisine at prices well below those in nearby Bled.

Radovljica makes a practical base for exploring the Julian Alps. Bled and its lake are a short bus ride away, the Vintgar Gorge is within easy reach, and the Karavanke mountains rise to the north.
