Linhartov trg

Linhartov trg is the heart of Radovljica and one of the best-preserved medieval squares in Slovenia. A row of Gothic and Renaissance townhouses lines both sides, their painted facades and wrought-iron details largely intact — an unusually complete picture of how a prosperous Slovenian market town looked in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The square slopes gently downhill, with a small fountain at the centre and a mix of cafes and restaurants occupying the ground floors of the historic buildings. In good weather the outdoor tables fill up quickly, and the views south toward the Karavanke mountains form a backdrop that no amount of Alpine kitsch can spoil. Most of what Radovljica has to offer — the Beekeeping Museum, the Lectar inn, the town walls — is within a two-minute walk of the square.

A story
The square is named after Anton Tomaž Linhart, an 18th-century playwright and historian born in Radovljica who wrote the first history of Slovenia in the Enlightenment period. His statue stands at the top of the square, though locals tend to treat him more as a bench landmark than a monument.
