Parque Maria Cristina

Parque Maria Cristina is the main city park of Algeciras, a shaded green in the upper part of town with mature trees, ornamental planting, and benches that are busy with local residents at all hours. The park has a slightly formal character — fountains, trimmed hedges, paved paths — that contrasts pleasantly with the rough-and-tumble port below.

It is a good place to sit and watch Algeciras life without any tourist pressure. The Hotel Reina Cristina, a historic establishment associated with the 1906 Algeciras Conference, is nearby. The park connects to the Parque de la Conferencia to the south, giving a pleasant stretch of green in the city.

A story
The park is named for Queen Maria Cristina, who visited Algeciras in the early 20th century and used the Hotel Reina Cristina — still operating nearby — as her base. The hotel itself became famous as the venue for the 1906 Algeciras Conference, where European powers met to decide Morocco's fate. Mature palm trees and subtropical planting give the park a slightly colonial character at odds with the industrial port visible from its edges.
