Iglesia Prioral de Nuestra Señora del Mayor Dolor

The castle and Prioral Church crown the highest point in Aracena, visible from the surrounding countryside for kilometres. The church was built by the Knights of Santiago beginning in the 13th century, making this hilltop a continuous site of religious significance for Moorish, Christian, and earlier populations.

The climb to the top rewards with views across the cork oak and chestnut forests of the Sierra de Aracena in every direction. The castle ruins alongside the church are fragmentary but evocative — stone arches and wall sections draped with wildflowers in spring. The combination of hilltop fortress, medieval church, and cave entrance at its feet makes the centre of Aracena more layered with history than most small Spanish towns.

A story
The church was built by the Knights of Santiago in the late 13th century on the ruins of a Moorish mosque, itself built on an earlier Visigothic structure. The tower, which appears at first to be a minaret repurposed as a bell tower, is in fact a later Christian addition built to mimic the Moorish forms it replaced.
