Bioparc Fuengirola

Bioparc Fuengirola is consistently rated one of the best zoos in Spain, and the praise is deserved. Rather than a conventional animal park, it is structured around four biogeographical zones — Madagascar, Equatorial Africa, Southeast Asia, and Savanna — each designed as an immersive recreation of the native habitat. The result is that you encounter animals in spaces that feel like the places they actually live.

The Madagascar section is the highlight, with ring-tailed lemurs, fossa, and aye-ayes in dense planted enclosures. The gorilla habitat is excellent, and the pygmy hippo pool allows underwater viewing. There is a daily programme of presentations (not performances — the animals are not made to perform) and guided feeding times. Allow three to four hours. The park is compact and air-conditioned in key areas, making it viable even in the height of summer. It is in the centre of Fuengirola, an easy walk or taxi from the seafront.

A story
Bioparc reimagined itself as an "immersion zoo" in 2001, removing traditional cages and designing each habitat to simulate the ecosystem of the animal's native region — so the gorillas live in a recreated Equatorial African rainforest with waterfalls and tropical planting, not in a concrete enclosure.
