The Plaza de la Constitución is the heart of Fuengirola's old town, set back a few blocks from the seafront in the part of town that predates the tourist boom. It is a proper Andalusian square — shaded by orange trees, flanked by the parish church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, and lined with terraces where locals sit with coffee while tourists wander past.
The church on the plaza dates from the 18th century and is worth a look inside for its simple whitewashed interior. The surrounding streets of the casco antiguo are the most atmospheric in Fuengirola — narrow, tiled, with geraniums on the balconies — and a stark contrast to the seafront promenade. The square hosts the weekly Tuesday market and a Christmas market in December. In the evening it fills with families doing the paseo. A welcome reminder that there is a Spanish town underneath the resort.
