Fuengirola Mosque

The Fuengirola Mosque is an architecturally striking building in the southern part of town, notable both for its size and for its design, which draws on classical Andalusian Islamic architecture with arched courtyards and decorative tilework. It was inaugurated in 1981 and serves the substantial Muslim community on the Costa del Sol — a population drawn mainly from Morocco, Pakistan, and other Muslim-majority countries that has grown significantly since the 1980s.

Non-Muslim visitors are welcome to enter outside prayer times. The interior is clean and peaceful, the courtyard pleasant. The mosque is also a reminder that Andalusia's connection to the Islamic world runs through fifteen centuries of history, not just recent immigration. It sits near the beach in the Los Boliches neighbourhood, about 2 km east of the old town.

A story
The Fuengirola Mosque was built with funding from Morocco and is the largest mosque in Spain outside of Granada and Córdoba — a reflection of both the large North African community on the Costa del Sol and the historic Islamic legacy of Andalusia.
