Birdwatching the Raptor Migration

One of Europe's finest spring raptor migrations, visible from the village

Gaucín sits directly beneath one of Europe's great bird migration corridors. In spring — particularly April and May — raptors and other soaring birds funnel through the narrow strait between Europe and Africa, and the thermals above the Serrania de Ronda carry thousands of birds northward in a single day. Honey buzzards, black kites, short-toed eagles, booted eagles, Egyptian vultures, and black storks all pass through in large numbers; on peak days the count runs into thousands.

The castle grounds at the top of the village provide an excellent vantage point. Early mornings are best before the thermals develop and the birds climb too high to identify easily. A second, smaller migration occurs in autumn (September and October), when the same species move south. The area around the Sierra Crestellina south of the village is also rewarding for resident species including blue rock thrushes, black wheatears, and red-billed choughs.

No specialist equipment is needed to appreciate the spectacle, though binoculars and a field guide make it considerably more rewarding. The Strait of Gibraltar — only about 60 kilometres south — is one of the top birdwatching sites in Europe, and Gaucín is close enough to the action to be on every serious birder's Andalucian itinerary.
