Perched at the very top of the village, this restored Moorish castle — also known as El Hacho — commands views that on a clear day stretch from the Straits of Gibraltar to the mountains of Morocco on the far side. The castle dates from Nasrid times and was built on even older foundations; the present structure is largely medieval, with later restorations.
The climb from the village plaza is short but steep, winding up through whitewashed lanes past flowering walls. At the top, the restored towers and sections of curtain wall give a good sense of the original fortification. There's no charge to enter, and the castle is open during daylight hours. Come at dusk if you can — the light on the Strait and the silhouette of the Rock of Gibraltar are genuinely spectacular.
