Walking in the Serrania de Ronda

Hill walking in the Serrania de Ronda, with a memorable railway station approach

The countryside around Gaucin is among the best walking terrain in Andalucia, with the Serrania de Ronda offering a network of tracks through oak woodland, gorges, and open hillside. The Sierra Crestellina, just south of the village, provides a challenging half-day ascent with panoramic views from the summit.

The classic approach to Gaucin on foot starts from the train station at El Colmenar in the valley below — a 13-kilometre uphill walk that gives a real sense of how the village sits in the landscape. The GR7 long-distance footpath passes through the area, connecting the village to Ronda and the broader Andalucian walking network. A handful of small guesthouses in the village are set up for walkers and can advise on routes and conditions.
