Aqueducto del Águila

19th-century brick aqueduct on the way to the Caves

Address Maro, 29787 Málaga

A graceful four-tier brick aqueduct in Mudéjar Revival style, built in the 1880s to carry water to the sugar mill at Maro. The aqueduct strides across a small ravine on 36 arches, the top tier crowned with a winged eagle (águila) sculpture that gave the structure its name.

Best viewed from the lay-by on the N-340 road to Maro, a few hundred metres before the turn-off to the Caves of Nerja. The aqueduct is no longer in use but is still in fine condition and is one of the more elegant 19th-century industrial monuments on the Costa del Sol.
