Frigiliana

Picture-perfect white village 7 km above Nerja

Address Frigiliana, 29788 Málaga

A small pueblo blanco in the hills above Nerja, repeatedly voted one of the prettiest villages in Spain — and busy enough in summer to know it. The old Moorish quarter (the Barribarto) is a maze of steep, whitewashed lanes hung with bougainvillea, terracotta tiles set into the cobbles depicting episodes from the 1569 Morisco rebellion that ended here at the Peñón.

The village has a clutch of well-judged restaurants and several wine bars and shops selling the local sweet wine (vino moscatel) and honey. There's an annual three-day Festival of the Three Cultures in late August celebrating the village's Moorish, Jewish and Christian heritage. Easy bus or taxi from Nerja, or a 90-minute walk from town.
