Iglesia de San Mateo

Sixteenth-century Mudéjar church built on the foundations of the town's first mosque.

Tarifa's main church sits at the upper end of Calle Sancho IV el Bravo, the spine of the old town. The building was begun in the early sixteenth century on the site of the principal mosque, and the Mudéjar carpenters who worked on the ceiling left it visibly Islamic in geometry — a coffered timber roof of interlocking stars and crescents over a Gothic stone hall.

The interior is cool and dim, with a baroque retable behind the high altar and a chapel of unusual depth on the south side that holds a venerated black-veiled Virgin. The plain whitewashed facade is later, dating to the 1770s, when the building was extended to the street. Free entry; opening hours vary by season and mass schedule.
