The fast ferry to Tangier leaves several times a day from the port — an hour each way, no car needed, and an excellent contrast to a morning in Tarifa. Closer to home, Algeciras handles most of the regional bus routes, and the white hilltown of Zahara de la Sierra is a 90-minute drive inland for a complete change of landscape. The cork-oak forests of Los Alcornocales begin half an hour north and continue inland for fifty kilometres.
