The Strait of Gibraltar is one of the most reliable places in Europe to see large cetaceans. Three species of dolphin live here year-round, pilot whales are present from spring to autumn, and pods of orcas follow the tuna migration into the strait between July and August. Sperm whales pass through in May and June; the occasional fin whale appears further out.
Two not-for-profit operators run from the port of Tarifa — firmm and turmares — and stick to slow approach distances under guidelines worked out with marine biologists. Trips last around two hours and run several times a day in season. Mornings are calmer and more comfortable; afternoons are when the wind picks up and the bigger species are more often spotted feeding.
