Casino de Huesca

The Casino de Huesca is the most elegant building in the city centre, a Modernista social club built in 1905 with an elaborately decorated facade and a well-preserved interior of carved wood, painted ceilings, and ceramic tilework. It was the gathering place of Huesca's professional classes in the early 20th century and retains some of that atmosphere.

The building is not always open to the public, but guided tours are available at certain times. Even from the outside it is worth a look — the quality of the decoration is a reminder that provincial Spanish cities often developed a more sophisticated aesthetic than their size would suggest.

A story
The Casino de Huesca was built in 1905 in Modernista style by the architect Ricardo Magdalena, who designed several important buildings in Zaragoza and Huesca. Unlike Barcelona's more famous Modernisme, Aragonese Modernisme tended toward a more restrained, French-influenced Art Nouveau. The Casino's interior has been well preserved and still operates as a social club, meaning it is sometimes possible to visit on a guided tour.
