Gijón is served by Asturias Airport (OVD), about 40 kilometres west of the city near Avilés. Several budget carriers connect it to Madrid, Barcelona, and a handful of European cities; Iberia and Vueling operate the main domestic routes. The airport has a bus connection to Gijón (about an hour) and taxis are available. The drive from Oviedo, the regional capital 30 kilometres south, takes about 35 minutes on the motorway; from Santander to the east, about two hours.
The faster option from Madrid is the train. Renfe's intercity services connect Madrid to Oviedo in about four hours on the high-speed line, and from Oviedo local trains cover the remaining distance to Gijón in under 30 minutes. Within Gijón, the centre is walkable — the beach, Cimadevilla, and most museums are within 30 minutes' walk of each other — and the local bus network covers the outer neighbourhoods including the Somió park area (Museo del Pueblo de Asturias). Taxis are plentiful and inexpensive by western European standards.
