Bar Abacо occupies a seventeenth-century mansion in the La Calatrava quarter and is probably the most theatrical bar in Palma. The interior is filled with an extraordinary accumulation of fruit, flowers, and decorative objects — enormous arrangements of pomegranates, lemons, and tropical flowers piled on every surface, gilded furniture, candelabras, and birdcages. It operates primarily as a cocktail bar and the drinks are expensive; you are paying partly for the setting and the spectacle.
Open from late afternoon and running through the evening, Abacо is a useful first stop before dinner — it establishes the mood for a Palma night out and the courtyard, visible from the street, is genuinely beautiful. It draws a mixed crowd of tourists who have read about it and local regulars who have been coming for years. The drink prices are steep but not outrageous for what is essentially one of the best-looking bar interiors in the Balearics.
