Cap de Formentor

The Cap de Formentor is the dramatic 20-kilometre headland that runs east from Port de Pollença into the Mediterranean, ending in a final lighthouse on a 200-metre cliff. The drive out is one of the great coastal roads of the Mediterranean, climbing through pine forest, switchbacking past the Mirador del Colomer viewpoint, and finally crossing a knife-edge ridge before the final descent.

The road is narrow, popular, and in summer a single car can choke it. Tourist traffic above the Mirador is now restricted in July and August — there is a regular bus from Port de Pollença, or you can drive early or out of season. The lighthouse has a small café; the swimming spot at Cala Figuera, just off the road, is one of the prettiest on Mallorca.

A story
The road to Cap de Formentor was carved out of the cliffs by the Italian engineer Antonio Parietti in the 1920s — the same engineer who built the better-known Sa Calobra road. Mallorquíns at the time said it could not be done.
