Pollensa

Inland Mallorcan town below the Tramuntana, known for cobbled streets and the Calvari staircase.

Pollença is a small inland town in the northeastern corner of Mallorca, set at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains. It has the feel of a genuinely lived-in Mallorcan town rather than a resort — cobbled streets, a Roman bridge, a large plane-tree-shaded main square, and a weekly Sunday market that attracts both locals and visitors.

The town's most striking feature is the Calvari staircase: 365 steps climbing to a hilltop chapel with views over the valley and the surrounding mountains. The climb is steep but worth it, especially in the early morning. The old monastery of Puig de Maria sits on another hilltop above the town, accessible on foot or by car, with a small hostel at the top.

The beach resort of Port de Pollença is 6 km away and has a long arc of sandy beach along a protected bay. The Cap de Formentor, the dramatic headland at the tip of the peninsula, is a 20 km drive from town and offers some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the Balearics.
