Bilbao Metro

Norman Foster-designed metro with iconic glass canopies

Norman Foster's metro system, opened in 1995, is a piece of public infrastructure so visually striking that the stations became a tourist attraction in their own right. The wide, curved glass and steel entrance canopies — nicknamed fosteritos by Bilbaínos — are as identifiable to the city as the Guggenheim. Riding a few stops is worth doing even if you don't need to go anywhere.
