Laguardia sits on a hollow hill. Beneath the entire old town runs a labyrinth of medieval wine cellars — bodegas — carved directly into the rock, some dating back to the 13th century. The network extends for kilometres and once held the entire village's wine production. Several bodegas are open for guided tours that take you down into the cool, dark tunnels and usually end with a tasting of Rioja Alavesa wine. Tours must be booked in advance; the tourist office on Plaza Mayor coordinates bookings and can arrange visits to various cellars. This is the single most distinctive experience Laguardia offers and shouldn't be skipped.
