Ysios Winery

The Ysios winery, a few kilometres outside Laguardia, is one of the more striking pieces of contemporary architecture in northern Spain. Designed by Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2001, its undulating cedar and aluminium roof mimics the profile of the Sierra de Cantabria behind it. The building looks best in morning light, when the aluminium surface reflects the sky and the lines of the facade cast long shadows across the vineyard rows.

Tours and tastings are available by appointment. The wines — primarily Tempranillo-based Rioja Alavesa — are well-regarded, and the setting makes this a more memorable visit than the average bodega tour. Book ahead, especially in summer and during harvest season.

A story
Santiago Calatrava designed the Ysios winery in 2001, taking the undulating ridgeline of the Sierra de Cantabria as his visual template. The aluminium roof was engineered to mimic the mountain silhouette visible behind the building — from the road approaching Laguardia, the winery and the mountains appear to be the same shape repeated at different scales.
