When to Go

Fuerteventura is one of the most reliably warm and sunny places in Europe year-round, which is its main selling point. Average temperatures range from around 19°C in January and February to 28°C in August and September. Rain is rare at any time of year — Fuerteventura gets less rainfall than any other Canary Island, and some years the interior barely sees any at all. The constant trade winds keep the coast from becoming oppressively hot in summer.

For beach holidays, spring and early summer (April through June) are ideal — warm enough to swim comfortably, not yet crowded with summer visitors, and the water is at its clearest. Summer brings the most tourists and the highest temperatures, but the wind keeps it bearable. Winter is the best season for windsurfers and kitesurfers, when the trade winds are at their strongest; the water never drops below 18°C. The Windsurfing and Kitesurfing World Cup takes place in late July or early August at Playa de Sotavento.
