Puerto de las Nieves

Puerto de las Nieves is Agaete's fishing harbour, a small rocky cove with a pier, a scattering of fish restaurants, and excellent views of the sea stack El Dedo de Dios. Fast ferries to Tenerife (around one hour) depart from here, making it the main access point for anyone travelling between the two islands without flying.

The harbour has a genuinely local feel — a few fishing boats still work out of here, and the restaurants serve freshly caught fish at decent prices. The black lava rock shoreline is dramatic rather than beach-friendly, but it's a fine place to sit with a coffee and watch the ferries and the sea. At weekends the restaurants fill up with families from Las Palmas making the 45-minute drive for lunch.

A story
The little harbour chapel, the Ermita de las Nieves, gave the port its name — Our Lady of the Snows. The original chapel held a Flemish triptych, the 'Virgin of the Snows', painted around 1530 and now kept in the Agaete parish church. Local fishermen believed the painting had miraculous protective powers, and they paid for it themselves.
