Convento de San Francisco (Museo de Arte Sacro)

Sixteenth-century Franciscan convent, now the island's sacred-art museum

The Convento de San Francisco was founded in 1588, one of the first religious houses on Lanzarote, and despite repeated pirate raids and several rebuildings it still preserves its sixteenth-century church and cloister. The complex sits a short walk south of the main square, on a quiet street of low whitewashed houses.

The church is the centrepiece — a long single nave with a Mudéjar-style coffered wooden ceiling, an altarpiece in gilded baroque, and a series of side chapels with paintings and polychrome statues collected from across the island. The adjoining cloister is given over to the Museo de Arte Sacro, with reliquaries, embroidered vestments, and a small collection of paintings from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The whole place is calm and rarely busy.
