El Médano

El Médano is a small town on Tenerife's southeast coast with a character very different from the resort strip further west. The wind that makes it uncomfortable to sit under an umbrella on the beach makes it perfect for windsurfing and kitesurfing: the constant Saharan trade winds and the broad sandy beach draw practitioners from across Europe and beyond. The town itself is low-rise and relaxed, with a good selection of seafood restaurants and a younger, more active crowd than the resort towns.

The beach at El Médano stretches for two kilometres, with the distinctive volcanic cone of Montana Roja providing a dramatic backdrop. Surf schools and equipment rental are plentiful. For those who don't windsurf, the Playa de la Tejita (also called the Red Beach) around the headland is quieter, backed by the red cliffs of the Montana Roja and good for swimming on calm days. The village centre around the main square is pleasant for an evening meal.

A story
El Médano hosts the Tenerife PWA World Cup, one of the most important professional windsurfing and kitesurfing competitions on the international circuit, usually held in July. The Playa del Médano and the adjacent Playa de la Tejita are rated among the best windsurfing beaches in Europe, with reliable trade winds that blow 300 days a year from the northeast. The volcanic plug of the Montana Roja rises directly behind the beach.
