Getting Around

A hire car is almost essential for seeing Tenerife properly — the public bus network (TITSA) serves the main towns and resorts but is slow, and the mountains and rural areas are inaccessible without your own transport. Roads are generally good, though the mountain roads in the Anaga and Teno areas are narrow and twisting. The motorway (TF-1) links the south resorts to Santa Cruz quickly; the north motorway (TF-5) connects Santa Cruz to Puerto de la Cruz.

Within the resorts, local buses and taxis are adequate. Santa Cruz has a modern tram system linking it to La Laguna to the north. For travel between the main resorts in the south, tour buses and transfers are available from most hotels. Hiring a bicycle is feasible on the coast and through the national park, though the mountains are serious cycling country only.
