Santander has two main beaches within the city itself, both easily reached on foot or by bus from the centre. El Sardinero, the longer and grander of the two, was the aristocratic bathing resort of the 19th century; the Gran Casino still watches over it from its hilltop perch. Playa de la Magdalena sits at the foot of the peninsula and is calmer and more sheltered.
