The Palacio de los Guzmanes is widely considered the finest Renaissance civil building in León. Designed by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón and completed in 1560, it occupies the north side of the Plaza de Santo Domingo alongside Casa Botines — the two buildings together making this square one of the more architecturally unusual in Spain.
The façade is organised in three tiers: a rusticated ground floor, a first floor with large windows and Plateresque ornament, and an open arcade loggia on the upper level that is exceptional for the period and region. The building now serves as the seat of the Diputación Provincial de León (provincial government) and can be visited on weekday mornings. The courtyard is particularly handsome.
