León's Plaza Mayor is a classic Castilian arcaded square, rebuilt in the 17th century after a fire. The surrounding buildings are uniform in height and style, with ground-floor colonnades sheltering cafes and market stalls. On Wednesdays and Saturdays a street market occupies the square.
The plaza sits at the heart of the Barrio Húmedo, and the bars under the arches stay busy well into the evening. It's more functional than spectacular compared to Plaza Mayor in Madrid or Salamanca, but it works well as a meeting point and orientation anchor for the old quarter. The town hall occupies one side.
