Museo de Albacete

The provincial museum is genuinely worth the trip to Albacete on its own. Set in a low modern building inside Parque Abelardo Sánchez, it holds two outstanding collections — a Roman section with a complete and exquisite set of bone dolls found in a Roman girl's grave at Ontur (the only intact such set in Spain), and a remarkable Iberian section with the Cerrillo Blanco bulls and sphinxes, 4th-century BC stone sculptures from a local necropolis.

The fine-arts wing on the upper floor is more uneven but includes a few paintings by the local 20th-century artist Benjamín Palencia. Allow an hour and a half. Free for EU citizens; closed Mondays.

A story
The museum's standout piece is the **Caballero No. 1**, a 4th-century BC Iberian sculpture of a rider on horseback that once crowned the funerary monument of a local aristocrat. Found at the Cerrillo Blanco necropolis, it is one of the most accomplished surviving works of pre-Roman Iberian sculpture.
